Requirements to Vote?

I've been listening to Neal Boortz, my favorite Libertarian talkshow host, and he's been talking about having requirements to vote. Some of you will say, "but it's a free country and everyone should not be turned away from voting". I don't want the fate of my country in the hands of people who can tell you who the new American Idol is or the winner of Survivor but can't tell you who their US Senators are, their US Representative is, or even who the Vice President is. If you do not know these three things...YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS TO DECIDE WHO RUNS OUR COUNTRY! These people can be dangerous and vote for someone like John Kerry, or worse, Hilldabeast Clinton.

I remember my college government class that an American citizen did not know how many stars were on the flag. I'm not bulls***ing you. They didn't! These people should not have the privilage who represents us in this republic. That's another thing...we do not live in a democracy it is a REPUBLIC. We elect representatives to represent us. Maybe if our education system actually taught some fact most Americans would understand that we do live in a republic. Luckly, I had a high school teacher who understood that and told our class that we do not live in a democracy. Yes, he was a Republican too.

Anyway, I think maybe we should have some sort of basic government/American history test. Any thoughts?

If we're going to have any test at all I think some sort of values/reasoning test would be more appropriate than a basic American history test. I think what an American history test would be getting at is "do you care enough about our country to know basic facts" (who is President, etc.), but what I think we should care about is "how do you think about your responsibility as a citizen". I think questions that revealed how people think about their civic duty would give us an idea of who is going to put the time and energy into learning about the candidates and the important issues they have positions on to make a meaningful decision when it comes time to vote. Anyone who doesn't take their civic duty seriously is either not going to vote or is going to vote based on criteria that aren't really relevant to a good decision making process.
