PC Era Coming To An End?

I was reading this article from I, Cringely. He talks about an impeading war between Microsoft and Intel due to the lack of innovation in the PC market, and he's right. There has been no truly significant updates in the market to warrent an upgrade of computer hardware within the past few years. My desktop is about 3 and a half years old and it can still do the tasks I need it to while playing the games I like.

Cringely makes the point that this is probably what caused the Apple/Intel alliance because:

"Intel doesn't have that option, though. Intel is a chip company and only a chip company, so it has to use its massive cash flow to transform the market into something that suits Intel, rather than transforming Intel into something thast suits the market.

Hmm...could the PC market be completely different five years from now? Ten years? We'll need to keep an eye on Microsoft, Intel, Apple, Google, Yahoo, and any other big tech players.
